Several versions of the Laghouat girl exist, probably created after Claus' trip to Algeria as a function of his exhibitions of Orientalist work in Antwerp and Brussels, each time at the Cercle artistique et littéraire. The format of this version suggests that it was painted on site. The Arabic inscription reads "Zafira", meaning "traveller". The girl's necklace is typical of the group of Jewish Berbers who to this day travel between Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco.
Literature
- Arnold Claus mentions one of these versions (nr. 69) in his unpublished catalogue raisonné
